Recently Bharati Shipyard hit the headlines following the announcement of its acquisition of more than 14 per cent stake in Great Offshore. There was another development of no less significance, though not much publicised. A world-class, 16,000-tonne lift capacity floating dock along with balance machinery and equipment (such as 150-tonne floating crane, automated panel lines, 180-tonne quayside travelling gantry, overhead travelling cranes and the like) arrived last week at Bharati’s Dabhol greenfield yard in Maharashtra. The floating dock came as part of Bharati’s acquisition of Newcastle-based Swan Hunter shipyard in 2007. The arrival of the floating dock, as the company sources pointed out, was significant for several reasons. The acquisition of the foreign yard took place at a low cost and therefore the floating dock was available cheap and without much delay. More important, it would help Bharati foray into ship repairing and add to its shipbuilding capacity.
