On Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers disclosed that they had acquired right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox, in return, will also get a 2025 Competitive Balance Round A draft selection and outfielder prospect Yophery Rodriguez in trade-offs. They will also get yet one more player to be called later.
Once listed as No 60 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list, 24-year-old Priester stands out among the MLB players. First selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft, he later debuted in Major League in 2023 and came in last July with the Red Sox when he was swapped for infield prospect Nick Yorke. He spent only a short time with Boston and has thrown one ball at the MLB stage for the team.
Brewers are plagued with pitching injuries
As per the reports, the Brewers are currently plagued by a string of pitching injuries. They will likely slot Priester directly into their Major League roster.
According to an MLB news report, the club has seven pitchers on the injured list. This list includes Nestor Cortes, Tobias Myers, Aaron Civale, Brandon Woodruff, Aaron Ashby, DL Hall, and Robert Gasser. Reportedly, of the original rotation, only Freddy Peralta is active.
Reportedly, Priester will bring with him mixed results at the top level. He has posted a 6.23 ERA with 69 strikeouts and 41 walks over 99.2 innings. However, his minor league states have remained promising. He has a 26-17 record with a 3.61 ERA and 428 strikeouts in 408.2 innings across 87 appearances.
Rodriguez headlines Boston’s return
As per the reports, in return, the Red Sox will be receiving one of Milwaukee’s most promising young players. Rodriguez, who is Brewers’ No 7 prospect as per MLB pipelines, was signed in 2023 with a $1.5 million bonus.
The 19-year-old has reportedly begun the 2025 season hot in High-A as he hit .417 with a double and triple in his first three games.
The young player has a career of .254 batting average with 13 home runs, 96 RBIs, and a .769 OPS over 165 minor league games. Reportedly, the Competitive Balance pick received by the Red Sox will be No 33 overall in next year’s draft.
The Red Sox will bolster their farm system with his addition. They will reshape their pitching depth chart. Meanwhile, Priester had fallen out of favor after a disappointing spring and Triple-A start.
