Reliance Foundation, USAID partner to bridge gender digital divide in India

Reliance Foundation has partnered with U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, which aims to aims to reduce the gender digital divide in India, the philanthropic arm of the billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate said on Wednesday in a statement.

In February 2019, the US government launched the W-GDP initiative that seeks to reach 50 million women in the developing world by 2025 by focusing on three aspects– women prospering in the workforce, women succeeding as entrepreneurs and women enabled in the economy. It leverages on new innovative fund and scaling private-public partnerships, and has so far reached 12 million women across the globe.

Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson, Reliance Foundation, said that the program will be launched in India in the fall of 2020 (September-November). “At the heart of this partnership, is our shared goal to help bridge both the gender divide and the digital divide in India,” she was quoted as saying in the statement.

The partnership was announced at a W-GDP event on Tuesday, Ivanka Trump, advisor to the president of the United States, said, “The W-GDP Fund was created to source and scale the most innovative programs to advance women’s economic empowerment. We are leveraging the resources and expertise of the U.S. government and the private sector so that activities have enduring, deep effects on the communities they reach.”
